Kapunda Community Gallery, in association with History Month, will open the exhibition “Masters With a Modern Twist” on April 15. The concept is for artists to select recognized paintings from the past, copy the work and incorporate into the painting something from our time.
Works range from the High Renaissance, the Dutch Masters to the Impressionists, Cubists, Realists, Expressionist and Surrealist works. Copying the paintings was challenging and fascinating, studying the way the original artists worked, their use of colour, composition and technique. The added challenge was choosing the modern objects to be a part of the painting.
It was also very interesting in researching the history of the artists, paintings and the eras. Over the centuries advances in science and technology gradually improved the production of oil paint. The invention of the tube to contain the paint and many new colours in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, gave artists freedom to paint in the moment and in the open. In this exhibition works are in various media.
